Deadline: A timed 2D platformer with a twist.

By: Bennett Thomas

The central mechanic of deadline is the timer; players have a limited time of 5 minutes to complete each level.  However, there is a twist. Each power (dash, jump, and invincibility) either takes a set amount of time off the timer or makes the timer count down faster. Additionally, the player has a limited hp as well. When either the timer or the player hp hits 0, the game is over.

This adds an on the fly resource management aspect to the traditional 2D platformer genre, as players must quickly determine whether or not they need to conserve their hp or the timer. The player can avoid risk to their hp using the invincibility power, but doing so will greatly reduce their timer. It also gives players the freedom to play off their platforming skill strengths. Players who can create the platforming sections quickly and with few jumps are rewarded with excess time to spend using the invincibility power to blast through hazards. On the other hand, players who can easily dodge or outmaneuver the hazards are rewarded with more time to spend on additional jumps or dashes during platforming sections.
